Treadmills

9/27/2005

If you are looking to lose weight or just improve on your overall health and physical fitness, a treadmill is a great choice. Because walking and running are such natural motions/activities for the human body, treadmills are the best choice of exercise equipment and studies show that people get more out of them than other types of fitness gear. They stay with it longer each time they use it and use the machine longer overall than other pieces of exercise equipment.

While there are manual treadmills out there and they are cheaper, motorized is really the way to go. Manual treadmills are usually more difficult to get started on and use and they are not usually as reliable or as well constructed as a motorized treadmill. You also cannot change the incline while in use, which brings us to our next topic.

Treadmills are an expensive investment and you shouldn't skimp on the features since boredom is the number one reason for a treadmill's disuse. Choose one with great features like programmable workouts that vary the incline and the pace, monitors for pulse, distance, calories, etc., and/or a book rack or hookups for other electronics like a CD player or TV/VCR.

Another thing to keep in mind besides type, price, and features is the motor and horsepower of the model. The most important statistic is its continuous duty rating and you want one that falls between 1.5 and 2.5 HP. Other things to keep in mind are the treadmill's noise level and how much space it will take up.
