What is the Zone Diet?

7/23/2005

The Zone dietary program is based upon consistent insulin management together with the high-doses of fish oil in order to control the creation of certain acids in your body. Insulin is managed by balancing protein and carbohydrate regularly, at each meal.

The overall goal of the Zone diet is to keep a balance between fat-storing insulin and the hormone glucagon sand. Glucagon has a major role in maintaining normal concentrations of glucose in blood, and is often described as having the opposite effect of insulin. That is, glucagon has the effect of increasing blood glucose levels.

The Zone's diet foods are a combination of a small amount of low-fat meats, fats, and carbs in the form of specific vegetables and fruits.

Proteins should be eaten with every meal and snacks. Carbs should be twice the size of the portion of protein. These include vegetables, beans, and whole-grains.

"Bad Carbs" such as bagels, brown rice, pasta, bagels, bananas etc. should be eaten in smaller portions.
